Granite kitchen countertops can make any kitchen feel chic and modern, and they are a great addition when you are renovating your home or building a new kitchen. Once you have installed your granite countertops you may think that you are all set and done. However, there are a few things that you should and shouldn't do when caring for and using granite countertops in order to ensure that they last you a lifetime.

Do's

There are a few things that you should do when it comes to using and caring for your granite countertops:

  • Clean Granite Surfaces With Soft Cloth Or Sponge - When you need to do a quick clean of your granite countertops, you should use warm water and a soft cloth or sponge. You don't want to use anything too rough on your countertops, and using warm water won't damage your countertops and is perfect for simply cleanups.
  • Clean Up Spills ASAP - As soon as you notice a spill on your granite countertops, clean it up! Wine, coffee, juice and other acidic beverages won't cause etches in your granite countertops, however if you let them sit for too long they can stain the granite. Certain types of cooking oils can also stain your granite and should be cleaned as soon as possible.
  • Seal Your Granite - Sealing your granite will ensure that you do not get stains by food and liquids seeping into the granite, causing permanent discoloration. Light colored granite should be sealed every 3 months for the best protection. If your granite is darker you can seal it less often, about once a year.

Likewise, there are a number of things that you should not do when you care for and use your granite countertops:

Dont's

  • Don't Use Certain Cleaners - Although using dish soap won't damage your granite countertops permanently, using it repeatedly will cause an unsightly build-up on your granite, dulling its beautiful, natural shine. Don't use common bleaches, de-greasers or other cleaners you might have used on your old countertops. These cleaners will wear down your granite's seal.
  • Don't Forget To Use Protection - Although you might think that you can set hot pans and pots on your granite with no problem, that is not the case. In rare circumstances the heat from the pot and pan could cause thermal shock, cracking the granite. More commonly, grit will get trapped between the pot or pan and the granite surface and can cause scratches on your countertop.

Use these do's and don'ts as a guide for using your granite kitchen countertops and you can be sure that they will stay beautiful and strong for many years to come.
